One Year in Our First Home

Somehow, it’s already been a year since my husband and I purchased our first home. We loved it as soon as we saw it because it felt so cozy. It was the living room we loved best—it had a chimney (which, truth be told, we have yet to use) and it was huge, which is great because that’s where we’d be spending a good chunk of our time. But, we liked the layout of the entire house, and the fact that it was so close to work and in a good neighborhood.

We’ve done a lot of work to the house since we first bought it. It was exciting to know we could personalize it exactly to our tastes (a freedom we definitely didn’t have in our apartments), but it’s also taken a lot of time and effort (and, let’s be real, money).

We painted every room, rearranged appliances, and spent the last year finding exactly the right furniture to give us the look we wanted.

We’re still not quite done—we have big dreams of redoing the kitchen and maybe even the bathroom some day, plus smaller to-dos, like creating a gallery wall up the stairs and organizing our sun room (not pictured below)—but we’re happy and proud of what we’ve accomplished.

This is our home.

A Gorgeous Sliding Barn Door for Our Home

My dad is a really talented person. He recently renovated both of the bathrooms in my parents’ home, one of which included a sliding barn door. It was gorgeous, and I gushed about it so much he and my mom offered to make one for my house, too.

They delivered the handcrafted door to our home on Wednesday and Bill and I love it so much. It’s the perfect addition to our new home (not just beautiful, but practical, too, as it helps insulate our house from the sun room).

But mostly, we love it because it was such a thoughtful gift from my parents. As they prepare to move to California, it means a lot to have a little piece of them here with us!

Thanks, Mom and Pop!

Things I Bought That I Love: Luke’s Diner Sign

I’m obsessed with “Gilmore Girls.” There’s no other way to say it. I could probably rewatch the series from now until the end of time and not be sick of it.

And Luke.

Backwards-cap-wearing, lumberjack-esque, good-with-his-hands-and-in-the-kitchen Luke.

Sigh.

But I digress.

I love “Gilmore Girls” so much that I’ve gotten my husband into it and we’re on our second rewatch. And I wanted to find a way to pay homage to the show in our new home without being over-the-top (even though I am, admittedly, over-the-top in life).

So this is our first piece of artwork for the kitchen.

I love it. It’s available on Etsy from StarCrossedDecor (YES, a shop dedicated to “Gilmore Girls” items!). Get your wood-grain Luke’s sign ($12.95), or go with the traditional Luke’s sign (each $16.95). Enjoy.

In home decor

edison

Edison light bulbs certainly aren’t new, but they are new to me. We just ordered a set of Edison bulbs for the dining room light fixture (which looks eerily like this photo!) and I can’t wait to put them in. They’re going to gorgeous and turn something simple like a light bulb into a fun accent piece for your home.

In travel

IMG_6930

Recently, my husband and I booked a Disney World vacation. This time, we went all out, booking a package straight through Disney. It was not only affordable, but it came with a bunch of perks, like these adorable MagicBands that I’ve secretly always wanted! Ahhh. Countdown till Disney: three weeks!

In food

Have you tried these egg-shaped peanut butter M&Ms yet?! They’re SO GOOD. I’m embarrassed to say how many I’ve eaten lately, but they’re a sweet little indulgence.

In social media

IMG_6881

I’ll admit that I’ve only recently gotten into Snapchat, but I’m doing my best to familiarize myself with it for work. I’m obsessed with the filters, and I can’t stop laughing at how silly they are.

Friday Favorites #11

In DIY

sc-yahtzee

Technically, everything in my list this week is a DIY, but we’ll start with this from Momtastic—it’s a giant game of Yahtzee for the backyard! I’ve never seen anything like it, but the dice seem easy enough to make, and I’d kind of love the option of playing when I have family over.

In nail art

sc-nails

If loving nails intentionally painted to look like sprinkle doughnuts is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

In accessories

sc-necklace

I love the look of this necklace, from the color blocking to the bow. Polka Dot Chair has a great tutorial to make your own using felt balls. So cute.

In beauty

sc-citrus

While searching for ideas for what to get my mom for Mother’s Day, I found this citrus sugar scrub from from Delia Creates. The printables are probably my favorite part, but I also love that this sugar scrub is pink and smells like grapefruit, lemon, or orange!

In home decor

sc-laundry

Since my fiance and I have been looking at houses, I’ve been really into home decor and renovation ideas, especially from Pinterest. I love, love, love this look for an unfinished basement! Most of the houses we’ve seen did have unfinished basements, but I don’t exactly have the cash to really do anything about that at this point—so this look, from Bees Knees Bungalow, is a lovely reminder that your basement doesn’t need to be “finished” to be a great space.

In beauty

sc-hello

My latest Birchbox was full of several incredible things, including Harvey Prince Hello body butter. The smell alone is to-die-for.

In swimwear

sc-icecream

It’s almost swimwear season, so I’ve been looking into getting a new suit I feel really great in. I’m head-over-heels with the entire selection at Modcloth (even if some of the suits are a tad pricey). This ice cream swimsuit is one of my favorites.

In DIY

sc-imadethis

I recently discovered the blog P.S. I Made It. I love the way the blogger visually lay out their DIY tutorials—first with a collage, then with a very easy guide to accomplishing the craft. This tutorial for a “marble” tray caught my eye. It’s a really cheap alternative to using actual marble and, prior to this, I didn’t know a thing like “marble contact paper” actually existed. I found a cheaper alternative than the one the blog mentioned, and oh my god I’m excited about things like marble contact paper. Who am I?

In blogs

1

I’ve found my new favorite blog: Delicious Designs. It combines two of my favorite things—food and home decor—in a highly visual blog. Since I’m in the market for a new house, I’m loving all of the home decor inspiration. The food is a nice touch, too.

Tell me this isn’t the most badass picture you’ve seen of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, feminist hero!

In art

3This print, designed by Courtney Myers, is to-die-for cute.

I’m oddly attracted to this mirror. But when I found out it was created for only $19 and that it was made entirely from compacts from the Dollar Tree, I loved it even more.

Friday Favorites #5

In shopping

sc-jane

I was once a recovering addict of VeryJane.com, a daily deal site that looks like it stepped straight out of Pinterest. I was buying so much that I forced myself to unsubscribe from the emails because I was spending… kind of a lot. Now that I’m at a new job, I feel like it’s okay to treat myself every now and then, so I’m back. Now called Jane.com, I highly recommend Jane.com for Pinterest addicts like me. (Shown above, their bauble necklace offering from yesterday.)

In decor

sc-book

This decor idea comes from Delightfully Noted. Technically, it’s supposed to be for Halloween, but I think it can work for any time of the year, depending on the book passage you decide to blow up and use as wall art. I’d probably choose something from my favorite, “The House on Mango Street.”

In articles

sc-dunkaroo

The best series on xoJane is their Recipe of the Week articles, written by Claire Lower. They’re always engaging, fun, visually beautiful, and each recipe looks genuinely delicious. This is one area of the internet where the comment section is fantastic to read, especially if you’re in the market for some new recipes. I especially want to try this “Dunkaroo dip.”

In fashion

sc-mindykaling

I am in love with Mindy Kaling in this lattice cut Mara Hoffman print swimsuit. That is all.

Friday Favorites #4

In television

sc-uks

Over the weekend, I binge-watched the new Netflix show “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” starring former “The Office” star Ellie Kemper, and I loved every second. Created by Tina Fey, the show has the absurdity and wit of “30 Rock” (right down to Jane Krakowski’s Jenna Maroney-esque character, Jacqueline Voorhees) and the heart and humor of “Parks and Recreation.” You’ll recognize lots of famous faces who make an appearance on the show, including Jon Hamm and Martin Short, but it’s Tituss Burgess, who plays Titus Andromedon (pictured), who steals the show.

In articles

sc-shade-court

Each week, I look forward to reading the latest edition of Shade Court by Jezebel writer Kara Brown. In the series, she takes companies, brands, and others to task for their use of the word “shade.”

In DIY

sc-striped-drink-perch

My fiancé and I recently nixed our end tables on either side of the couch because they kept accumulating clutter. I don’t regret it, but I do miss having a sturdy surface for my drinks. I’m thinking we could use something like this adorable DIY striped drink perch from blogger François et Moi.

In photography

sc-insta-photos

I’m using this blog as a place to try to get better at photography. It’s a slow process, especially since this is just a small, side project, but I’m doing what I can. I have saved and pinned tons of tutorials for getting better at taking pics, but I hardly ever get around to reading them because they all seem complicated. Which is why I really enjoy this tutorial from Glitter Guide! Just 5 steps for taking better Instagram photos. Here’s to improving my low-lit pics!

sc-skirt

I love this look. Someday, I will try it and hopefully pull it off—and I’ll use this fantastic tutorial by Yarns and Buttons to do so!

In art

sc-red-lips

This gorgeous art would add some color and vibrancy to any room. Plus: it’s made from recycled pallets.

In fashion

sc-naomi-campbell

I think this is an old picture, but it’s the first I’m seeing it, and now I can’t stop thinking about Naomi Campbell in this dress. [Insert 100 heart eyes emojis here.]

In office decor

sc-gold-pink

This is everything I want in an office. It comes from Just Bella Blog, and it’s beautiful. As I decorate my office at work, I know I’ll be referencing it. I even ordered some gold polka dots to put on my wall at work! Follow my Home and Office Decor board on Pinterest to see what other decorating looks inspire me.
