DIY Long Necklace Tutorial

I’ve been waiting for my chance to turn an old pearl necklace into a pearl necklace accentuated with a ribbon for quite some time. One of the first pins I ever saw was this:

And I was immediately like, “Yes, self, you need to do that.”

For whatever reason, I never did, until I recently, when I ended up with two pearl(ish) necklaces from Miss A that I needed to alter. It’s probably one of the easiest DIY tutorials you’ll stumble across .

DIY Ribbon Necklace Tutorial

What you need:

  • Necklace
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers (optional)

Step one: Decide how long you want your necklace to be, and cut your ribbon accordingly. There is no exact science to this, but make sure you leave a little extra room, since you will be tying the ends.

Step two: Slide the ribbon through the metal clasps on either side of the necklace.

Step three: Tie a knot to secure the ribbon.

Step four: Trim the ribbon as close to the knot as you can.

Step five: Remove any excess parts, such as a clasp you may no longer need.

Cute, right? Looking back, I wish I’d added the embellished bow like in the first image, so I may go back and do that. Otherwise, I’ve worn this necklace a few times and even received some compliments. Give it a shot!

Review: Miss A Jewelry

Miss A is an accessory shop, particularly specializing in jewelry, where almost everything is $1. Seriously. From their earrings to their necklaces, bracelets to hair accessories, most of the items sold on Miss A will run you just $1 each. Of course, there are a few things that are slightly more expensive — their charm shop, for example — but I haven’t stumbled across anything on the site that’s more than $5.

I was alerted to Miss A a while back from my friend Lyndsey, but it wasn’t until recently that I took the plunge and made a purchase.

I ended up ordering four necklaces, two pairs of earrings, and two necklace/earring sets.

The good

The price. I decided to use my Miss A purchase as a chance to experiment with some necklaces/looks I might otherwise shun if they were pricier. Nothing felt like a huge commitment of investment, so I didn’t mind buying. I couldn’t get over the fact that I could get any of those items for just $1! Seriously? I felt like I was dreaming.

The shipping was quick, too, going out three days after my initial purchase, arriving on my doorstep just shy of two weeks after I placed my order. Plus, it only cost $3.95 for shipping (their standard, flat fee), which is awesome! And here’s what the packaging looked like (once I took it out of the bag it arrived in):

Some of the items I got ended up being really cute, too, especially the bow/pearl earrings and the pearl/drop earrings sets in white and red, which were among my favorites. Quality-wise, most of the items seemed to hold up.

The bad

The first negative I encountered with Miss A had to do with the site and its stock: all of the cute items I wanted were sold out! I felt like most of the items I wanted most were sold out in the colors I wanted, so I had to settle for a second favorite color or not get the item at all. It happens, but still!

As for the merchandise itself: some of the items appeared different in real life than how they looked in the photos. I felt that some of the items looked a little cheap, while in the pictures, they didn’t. That’s not a dealbreaker for me, but just something to be mindful of.

Alas, the long necklace with two large pearl accents broke almost immediately, after I put it on. Thankfully, the other items held up better and I haven’t experienced any other snafus (which is pretty good considering the price).

If you’re a fat girl like me, though, you’ll want to be wary of any necklaces that aren’t loose or dangly. The red and white pearl necklace/earring sets were a disappointment in that those necklaces were actually too small for me. What I ended up doing instead was breaking off the clasps and morphing those necklaces into long necklaces, accented with a ribbon.

I think it worked out well, actually!

Overall rating

3 out of 5 spoonfuls of sugar

I kept waffling between rating them a 3 or a 4, so I’d say it probably sits closer to a 3.5. I was pleasantly surprised with how the Miss A items looked and held up. I added a few new items to my jewelry collection for a really minimal price, and I’ve already placed my second order with them! I’d recommend perusing the site for your next jewelry binge.
