Things I Wore (and Did) in January 2019

Some months you only manage to snag two outfit photos because your body is changing and expanding and you don’t feel really comfortable in it yet so that’s that.

I may only be five months along, but it became official in January that I needed to switch out of my normal wardrobe and switch to a leggings + sweaters or tights + flowy dresses type of look and frankly, despite all of the wonderful parts of being pregnant, I wasn’t feeling my best physically, so I didn’t document much.

Here are the two photos I did nab.

I wore this to go to the local casino and felt pretty cute, though the dress was a little on the long side. (Downside to having short legs!)

All right, y’all — my first piece of maternity wear! Yay!

And, my first “baby bump” pic! It’s not much, but my belly is sticking out further than my boobs now, so that’s an official — if not quite noticeable — bump. So exciting!

In January, I hit five months, found out the gender of the baby (sharing in a post soon), spent time with family and friends, explored downtown Springfield, and worked with Bill to accomplish a lot toward getting ready for baby. I’m just sorry I didn’t take more photos!

A glimpse:

Until next month, when hopefully I’ll take some extra pics! xo.

Things I Wore (and Did) in December 2018

So long, December. Saying it’s been quite the month might be a little bit of an understatement! But first, a few of the things I wore…

All right. Onto the big stuff:

IMG_8384.JPG

I’m three months pregnant!

Bill and I are so, so, so excited! We found out the news while in Disney World, the most magical place on Earth, which is perfectly apt. We confirmed the news when we got home from vacation and it was truly incredible having a little secret, just the three of us (four of us, counting Obi), for a few months. We waited until Christmas to share the news with loved ones, which meant I was already into the second trimester. Baby is now the size of a little peach (according to The Bump app)! It’s been magical and hilarious watching him or her grow into different fruit sizes over the last couple of weeks.

I’ll be frank and say we were incredibly hesitant to share this news publicly. As someone with PCOS, getting pregnant and staying pregnant is a challenge and there is a real possibility this pregnancy won’t be the easiest. But here we are, and so far so good (!), so we’re celebrating and taking everything one day at a time.

Seeing our baby on an ultrasound really helped make things feel real. Bill and I couldn’t help but get emotional watching our baby move around and, later that afternoon, we heard the heartbeat. It was one of the best sounds we’ve ever heard.

Our friends have been elated by the news, offering immense and significant support and love. Their outpouring of love has meant so much to Bill and to me and we really feel like we are so fortunate to be surrounded by good people who are so good to us.

Of course, family can’t wait to meet the little one! Here’s a peek into part of how we shared the news with family. Each of the soon-to-be grandparents and great-grandma got a card, a framed photo of the baby’s first ultrasound, and the announcement from Obi above. Everyone else got a onesie-shaped cookie with a tag letting them know of their soon-to-be status. It went so well and everyone seems really happy for us!

Aside from that super big news… here are some of the other things I did in December! Not pictured: Our beautiful, finished kitchen floor. Hopefully I remember to nab some photos soon. Also, yes: that IS a signed Spice Girls poster!!!

More soon.

What I Wore (and Did) in November 2018

It’s so far away from November that I barely remember what I wore or what I did, so I’m keeping this one short and sweet. The month flew by in a whirlwind for reasons I’ll share soon (but not yet) and somehow, it’s literally the end of December and 2018.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get many pictures during the month, though I did get to do plenty of memorable things, like…

  • Accompany one of my besties and my adorable nephew, O, to meet Daniel the Tiger
  • Vote
  • Travel up to Brattleboro, Vt.
  • “Graduated” from therapy (heeey, y’all, I’m kind of emotionally stable)
  • Nabbed another pair of “Hamilton” tickets because once isn’t enough
  • Had dinner with friends
  • Gave a presentation at work for many of our campuses
  • Started installing a new kitchen floor (OK, fine, I watched my husband and father-in-law begin to start on the kitchen floor, but I did paint most of the sunroom)

Here are some of the things I wore.

Things I Wore (and Did) in October 2018

To say that October was kind of the best month would be an understatement — like, so many good things happened I don’t even know where to begin.

  • Celebrated Bill’s 30th birthday!
  • Saw Hamilton in Boston!
  • Took an incredible, Halloween-themed trip to Disney (full post to come)!
  • Got great news (which I can share soon)!
  • Made serious progress on a writing project!
  • Hosted a spooky dinner party!
  • Had friends over!
  • Celebrated Halloween with Obi as a Beanie Baby!
  • DID I MENTION HAMILTON AND DISNEY WORLD? I mean. COME ON. It really doesn’t get better than that, people!

I don’t want to seem like the kind of person who pretends only good things happen to her because that isn’t true. Behind the scenes, I struggled with some family things, I caught a viral infection on the way back from Disney and was out of commission for 48 hours, I worked a lot (some nights I worked, left, brought my laptop home, worked more, then did it all again the next day), I didn’t have enough time to pursue hobbies, I stressed about politics a lot, and I didn’t eat super well.

I say this not because it wasn’t an incredible month (IT WAS), but because I think it’s unrealistic to pretend like things were all good. There’s always good and bad, but I just love reminding myself of how relatively happy and fortunate I am in my life.

To start: here’s what I wore!

IMG_5616

I’m never mad to be twinning with one of my work favorites, Kelsey. Interestingly enough, we wore these outfits on the same day not once but twice in October. We even tied our hair back both days. #FRIENDSHIP

Outfit details

  • Dress: Fashion to Figure
  • Cardigan: Old Navy
  • Leggings: Old Navy (OMG, guys, all of my Old Navy leggings suddenly developed holes in the legs at the exact same time so I’m down to just one pair and it’s depressing)
  • Shoes: Tieks

My favorite outfit of the month because it’s suuuper 90s inspired. I had originally purchased an overall dress with this shirt, but the dress was a touch too small. I kept waiting to “lose the weight” but never did and said fuck it, I want to wear this shirt! I separated it from the dress and repurposed it and now this is one of my go-to looks.

I had a presentation to give to about 40+ people… on Halloween. I really wanted to wear my Halloween dress, but I felt like I needed to dress it up a little, so I stuck a blazer over it and rolled with it.

October, I love you always, and I’ll miss you dearly. Until next year!

Things I Wore (and Did) in September 2018

Work has been intense. September was my first month where the semester was in session and I was in my new role managing all of the social channels for the institution where I work. One week, I put in so many extra hours that I worked three full extra days. It’s been a lot, but really rewarding! For the first time in my career, I’m getting paid to do one thing well. I mean, managing every aspect social media for a large brand is hard work, but that’s always sort of been a thing I’ve had to do on top of a lot of other duties. Now I get to just focus on that and I love it!

What’s helped keep me sane from all of the hours I’ve been working has been all of the fun Bill and I have been having in our down time. We had lots of mini adventures in September — everything from exploring a new winery to going apple and pumpkin picking; venturing to the new casino in town to a quick day trip to Brattleboro, Vt.; spending time with friends to supporting the RuPaul’s Drag Race season 10 sisters.

Plus, the leaves have been changing (!) and we’ve been embracing our favorite season (!!) and we booked our next vacation: DISNEY WORLD AT HALLOWEEN. I’m over-the-moon excited!

Here are some of the outfits I wore during the warmer-than-I’d-like September.

With the craziness of September behind me, I cannot wait for the rest of October. Hamilton (!) and Disney World (!!) — here we come!

Things I Wore (and Did) in August 2018

Things have been interesting — a mix of good, bad, and stuff in between. At work, August was one of the busiest months I’ve had as it led right up to move-in weekend (arguably the most hectic weekend of the year for marketers in higher ed!). At home, Bill and I have done a little bit of travel, but we’ve been working really hard to get our finances in order — and KNOCK ON WOOD it’s working. Yay!

In August, in between all of the work (and there was a lot), I had lots of fun. Bill and I went to see Queen Bey and Jay’s On the Run II show, which was incredible. We’ll ignore the fact that we were stuck in traffic to and from the venue and that we missed our beloved Chloe x Halle’s performance because of it, but the show itself was everything. Obviously. It’s Beyoncé! (And Jay Z.)

We also visited Cape Cod for the first time, spending a weekend in Provincetown and Wellfleet, both of which we loved. Originally, we booked the trip because we had tickets to see our favorite drag queen, Trixie Mattel, perform her stand-up show. Unfortunately, Trixie cancelled on a few shows, including ours. We’d already booked the hotel, though, so we just enjoyed ourselves in the Cape. It was so much fun! It was raining when we arrived but held off for the rest of the weekend so we could explore the area. We especially loved the Cape Cod National Seashore (the views were beautiful) and everything about P-Town. We’d love to go back.

The next weekend, my cousin, Adam, got married and we had so much fun at the wedding. It was great for Bill and I to spend time with my close family and let loose. I also think Bill liked watching me get super drunk and dance terribly and now he has video evidence which he can blackmail me with until the end of time! Also in August, Bill and I visited the Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival, a staple of our respective childhoods (we both grew up in the same time) but an event we hadn’t been to in years. It was a blast and great to be back in our old stomping grounds.

Here’s a look at some of the outfits I wore throughout the month!

Here’s what I did through photos.

All in all, a good month and now I’m OVER-THE-MOON that it’s September. Fall is my time, y’all. Bring on the pumpkin spice!

What I Wore (and Did) in July 2018

My hair is getting long again and I’m feeling back in my element. I missed my long hair which went away last May when I chopped it all off. My long hair and glasses have been such a defining trait of mine for my life that it feels weird when I make a change, which is why it’s kind of funny that just when my hair has gotten back to “normal” I’ve decided to change my glasses.

New eyes, y’all. I went from my regular-degular black wayfarer-esque glasses to some cat eye glasses—with glitter accents! Because I’m 30 years old and trying to live my best life!

In July, it was hot and gross and rainy, but I wore cute clothes and had good hair days, so it all evens out, right?

Fun fact: on the day I wore this outfit, it was downpouring when I got out of work. So, my dress was soaking wet during my 10-minute walk to the car and I ended up having to take my shoes off and walk barefoot because my feet were just sliding around a bunch in the shoes. Thanks, terrible weather!

In July, I spent a lot of time outside in spite of the oppressive heat. I visited the Quabbin Reservoir for the first time (beautiful!) while Bill spent time with friends and sent me an adorable selfie with one of their dogs; I went out to dinner with Bill a few times; had my annual Grandma-Daughter day at the beach; spent time with beautiful friends on several occasions, including one which had photographic evidence (yay, Cait and Paige!); and spent an incredible day on the CT shoreline with Bill.

Here it is in photos.

What I Wore (and Did) in June 2018

June was kind of a chaotic—though overall good—month, with a jumble of unexpected family things going on (that ultimately ended well and resulted in visits from my parents!).

At work, I was able to start my new role and I’ve loved it so much. Though I really enjoyed my previous role, getting back into managing social media feels like exactly what I’ve been meant to do. I missed it a lot in the short time I was away and, though I was a little rusty at first, I’m feeling back in my element.

At home, Bill and I celebrated our 12th anniversary and 3-year wedding anniversary, which is crazy to think about. How is it that we’ve known and loved each other for 12 incredible years already? I knew and loved him back when he was just a kid in gym class teaching me how to play tennis (I was terrible at it) and when we were goofing off in art class. Now we’ve built a beautiful life together and I couldn’t feel more loved and celebrated.

I also had lots of fun in June:

  • Spending time with friends, which I love saying, because for the first time since high school I have friends I regularly hang out with again (!)
  • Having an “Auntie/Nephew” babysitting adventure with the wonderful little O
  • Enjoyed time with my mom and dad as they visited from California. For the first time in two years, I got to see my dad on Father’s Day and my brother and I took him down to Niantic, Conn., to check out the Book Barn, my favorite book store.
  • Took a half day to myself and wandered around Northampton, Mass.
  • Had an incredible anniversary dinner at a wine and tapas bar called Barcelona with Bill where we ate and drank a bunch (including some pre-dinner drinks at Bar Taco)
  • Got selected as one of the lucky few who got to purchase tickets to Hamilton in Boston (!) and then BOUGHT TICKETS TO HAMILTON IN BOSTON (!!!), which will be part of Bill’s 30th birthday gift and OH MY GOD I’M SO EXCITED!!!!
  • Watched the sun set during the summer solstice with Bill and Obi
  • Celebrated my writer friends with a beautiful Writer’s Row dinner at my friend Judy’s house (Peanut, Judy’s dog, is the cutest)
  • Went to an incredible drag brunch show and then spent the rest of the afternoon in Northampton, Mass., with Bill, where we shopped and got delicious ice cream
  • Caught up with my wonderful friend, Steph, and hosted her at my house and made the most first-ever charcuterie board
  • Celebrated the 4th of July early with sparklers

Is it stupid to say I’m overall really happy with my life right now? It’s one of those things I don’t think about that often, and I’m almost fearful of saying it out loud or even thinking it or writing it because I worry I’ll jinx it. But I am. It feels good and I’m so lucky.

And here’s what I wore!

Things I Wore (and Did) in May 2018

May was a truly magical month. I always tend to love May: warmer weather, longer days, and it’s my birth month so I’m very biased.

But this May was extra great. First, I was promoted at work, and as of June 4, I’m officially back in the social media realm! I’m so, so, so excited (and it’s been fantastic so far). I also had so much fun spending time with Bill and friends and Obi.

Also: I turned 30.

And, I didn’t just turn 30. I turned 30 in style. Like, as a spoiled 30-year-old princess and I loved every single second. It started with an incredible gift from Bill—meet-and-greet tickets to see my favorite drag queen, Trixie Mattel. I MEAN. I’m not exaggerating when I say that night was one of the best of my life.

If you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, or if you’re even just a fan of Trixie, then you know she’s hysterical. I’d been dying to see one of her live shows, which mixes comedy with her folk music. Bill and I had meet-and-greet tickets to one of her shows back in September but, unfortunately, weren’t able to go. So this was everything!

Before the show, WE GOT TO MEET HER. I was so nervous that I got drunk, despite having done this once before and despite knowing she’d be perfectly lovely, which she was. I was also able to give her a gift: an adorable beaded Miss Vanjie bracelet. When I handed the bracelet over to her, rambling about how I bought it for her and didn’t make it, she put the bracelet on her wrist and said to me, “You had to buy this? You dumb bitch.”

Trixie Mattel called me a dumb bitch I expect to see that on my gravestone.

I also got to take a photo with one of my favorite local drag queens, Mia E Z’lay, who performs regularly at Drag Brunch in Holyoke, Mass., which Bill and I love to go to. It was awesome!

Then there was the show. I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in a really long time; I laughed until my stomach hurt, until my throat ached, and until I cried, and then I laughed some more. I laughed so hard that I made friends with the (very drunk) couple in front of me who couldn’t stop laughing every time I laughed. Trixie’s show was the perfect mix of smart comedy and terrible puns, 90s music that’s so bad it’s good, skits, high-brow jokes, low-brow jokes, drag jokes, and folk music. I loved literally every single second of it, including the time I spent inhaling two bags of peanut M&Ms in between my bajillion glasses of wine.

That alone would’ve been an incredible birthday.

But then the next day Bill and I left for a seven-day cruise to the Caribbean. I KNOW. Whose life is this?!

More details on the cruise to come, but here’s what I wore during this momentous month!

Things I Did (and Wore) in April 2018

I’m happy. I’ve been feeling like I’m at a great place in my life—with my husband and my dog, of course, who are my lights—but with everything else, too: work, friends, family, me. Things just feel good and I’m trying to savor that feeling. My therapist has been trying to help me be more positive (Lizandra, you’d be so proud) and I feel like it’s been working. Maybe it’s the sunshine or maybe it’s just that life can just be pretty great sometimes. All I know is I want to bask in this.

That said, I haven’t been taking as many outfit photos lately, especially as I’ve been working hard to get my spending under control (thus, less new clothes to show off). But I did nab a couple of photos!

Here are some of the things I wore in April.

IMG_4929

I really like this dress, which is a great combination of loose and cute and also it has pockets which you all know that I love.

IMG_5070

It took me a while to wear this outfit as I feel like it’s the most I’ve ever shown off my belly. Let’s be real: I’m fat, and my polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) makes it so that I tend to carry my weight right in my stomach. So, it took me a long time of staring at this dress (a gift from my mom) in my closet before I finally gained the courage to wear it out.

I wore it.

And nothing bad happened!

I even felt pretty good in it. I am always seeing these amazing plus-size beauties on Instagram showing off their belly, so why not me? It may not be an all-the-time thing for me, but I shouldn’t be ashamed of my body. It’s taken me nearly 30 years to realize that, and I definitely still struggle (especially with feelings about my upper arms and back), but I’m working on it.

Okay, so, this isn’t a typical “what I wore” photo, but I did wear this makeup, and I loved it. I never wear lipstick, but I think I could! On a lazy Saturday afternoon, I decided to toy around with some of the makeup that’s been piling up in my vanity (a combination of Ipsy gems and my impulse purchases).

Surprisingly, I loved this red matte lip.

Then I decided to venture even further out of the box and go for a red glitter lip, because why not?

Plus, here are things I did in April, which included:

  • Savoring every magnificent moment of Beychella (and then obsessing over it, talking about it, thinking about it, listening to other people analyze it, and loving it all over again)
  • Listening to new music, including the Cardi B and Chloe x Halle albums
  • Finally meeting up with April, my longtime Tumblr/Twitter friend, as she visited Brown in Providence (I love the internet! Thanks for bringing me such great friends!)
  • Finished a lovely, wonderful project at work called “Building Bridges”, which was aimed at bringing people together across their differences and celebrate the diversity in this big, beautiful world
  • Took advantage of the first nice day in April with my husband and visited our favorite winery
  • Had dinner with Bill and two wonderful (new to me, old to him!) friends
  • Spent some quality time with my friends and their hilarious, adorable kids
  • Ate some pie because of some good work news (which I can share soon!)
  • Petted dogs at work because of course
  • Tried to go to People’s Court (yes, the TV show), failed, and turned the day around by stopping by Milkcraft for some incredible ice cream

A great April and I’m ready for May, an upcoming vacation, and turning 30!

xo.
