What I Wore (and Did) in July 2018

My hair is getting long again and I’m feeling back in my element. I missed my long hair which went away last May when I chopped it all off. My long hair and glasses have been such a defining trait of mine for my life that it feels weird when I make a change, which is why it’s kind of funny that just when my hair has gotten back to “normal” I’ve decided to change my glasses.

New eyes, y’all. I went from my regular-degular black wayfarer-esque glasses to some cat eye glasses—with glitter accents! Because I’m 30 years old and trying to live my best life!

🙂

In July, it was hot and gross and rainy, but I wore cute clothes and had good hair days, so it all evens out, right?

Fun fact: on the day I wore this outfit, it was downpouring when I got out of work. So, my dress was soaking wet during my 10-minute walk to the car and I ended up having to take my shoes off and walk barefoot because my feet were just sliding around a bunch in the shoes. Thanks, terrible weather!

In July, I spent a lot of time outside in spite of the oppressive heat. I visited the Quabbin Reservoir for the first time (beautiful!) while Bill spent time with friends and sent me an adorable selfie with one of their dogs; I went out to dinner with Bill a few times; had my annual Grandma-Daughter day at the beach; spent time with beautiful friends on several occasions, including one which had photographic evidence (yay, Cait and Paige!); and spent an incredible day on the CT shoreline with Bill.

Here it is in photos.

What I Wore (and Did) in June 2018

June was kind of a chaotic—though overall good—month, with a jumble of unexpected family things going on (that ultimately ended well and resulted in visits from my parents!).

At work, I was able to start my new role and I’ve loved it so much. Though I really enjoyed my previous role, getting back into managing social media feels like exactly what I’ve been meant to do. I missed it a lot in the short time I was away and, though I was a little rusty at first, I’m feeling back in my element.

At home, Bill and I celebrated our 12th anniversary and 3-year wedding anniversary, which is crazy to think about. How is it that we’ve known and loved each other for 12 incredible years already? I knew and loved him back when he was just a kid in gym class teaching me how to play tennis (I was terrible at it) and when we were goofing off in art class. Now we’ve built a beautiful life together and I couldn’t feel more loved and celebrated.

I also had lots of fun in June:

  • Spending time with friends, which I love saying, because for the first time since high school I have friends I regularly hang out with again (!)
  • Having an “Auntie/Nephew” babysitting adventure with the wonderful little O
  • Enjoyed time with my mom and dad as they visited from California. For the first time in two years, I got to see my dad on Father’s Day and my brother and I took him down to Niantic, Conn., to check out the Book Barn, my favorite book store.
  • Took a half day to myself and wandered around Northampton, Mass.
  • Had an incredible anniversary dinner at a wine and tapas bar called Barcelona with Bill where we ate and drank a bunch (including some pre-dinner drinks at Bar Taco)
  • Got selected as one of the lucky few who got to purchase tickets to Hamilton in Boston (!) and then BOUGHT TICKETS TO HAMILTON IN BOSTON (!!!), which will be part of Bill’s 30th birthday gift and OH MY GOD I’M SO EXCITED!!!!
  • Watched the sun set during the summer solstice with Bill and Obi
  • Celebrated my writer friends with a beautiful Writer’s Row dinner at my friend Judy’s house (Peanut, Judy’s dog, is the cutest)
  • Went to an incredible drag brunch show and then spent the rest of the afternoon in Northampton, Mass., with Bill, where we shopped and got delicious ice cream
  • Caught up with my wonderful friend, Steph, and hosted her at my house and made the most first-ever charcuterie board
  • Celebrated the 4th of July early with sparklers

Is it stupid to say I’m overall really happy with my life right now? It’s one of those things I don’t think about that often, and I’m almost fearful of saying it out loud or even thinking it or writing it because I worry I’ll jinx it. But I am. It feels good and I’m so lucky.

And here’s what I wore!

Things I Wore (and Did) in July 2017

One of my favorite parts about looking back on the month’s outfits is that it gives me a good sense of all of the things I’ve done recently.

I sometimes find myself feeling like I don’t “do” anything, like I spend far too much time on Twitter retweeting jokes or on the couch rewatching “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

But Bill and I have some pretty awesome adventures, which can be easy to forget when I’m lazing about the house. This is such a nice way for me to be reminded of all of the little and big moments I have with him and that I have with myself.

July 2017 was a big month for me. I wrapped up my time working at a job I mostly enjoyed, and that was tough. I had to say goodbye to colleagues I really cared about and respected and friends I admired and loved. I said goodbye to a 10-minute commute and super short work days. I said goodbye to my first-ever office. I said goodbye to the job that helped my husband and I realize that western Massachusetts was the right place for the two of us to settle down. But I needed to go. So I left because I was treated very, very unfairly by my boss and I knew I deserved better, and because the light on my future there was slowly dimming. It was not an easy decision.

And I started a new job, one I was very excited about, a brand new role as Diversity Communications Manager that would combine my love for communications and writing with my passion for social justice. It’s the first job where I can be my whole self, where I won’t have to shield parts of me. I can bring the social justice knowledge I seek outside of work into my actual job. It feels liberating. I’ll admit it was scary—absolutely terrifying—to make the leap from a job where I felt comfortable to a job that would make me begin anew. But sometimes the scary thing is absolutely the right thing to do, even if it’s hard. My first three weeks have been incredible; they’ve pushed me to exercise skills I haven’t used in years and I feel like I’m really valued and heard and respected. I’m so happy I made the leap, and I hope it only gets better from here.

As for the rest of July, I took some trips to the beach. I found myself enthralled by poetry. I read a bunch. I spent time outside in the sun. Bill and I went to a drag show, we traveled to the Berkshires, we were inspired by art, we explored western Mass a little.

All in all, life is good.

And here’s what I wore.

My last day of work. Sadly, this also means it’s the last photo EVER with that polka-dotted wall. I shall miss it!

I feel so beautiful in this dress. It reminds me of the flamenco dancers we saw when we were in Barcelona. (I literally cannot believe that I got to type that sentence. Who even am I?)

Despite feeling beautiful in this dress, it’s not exactly practical. But what better event to wear it to than a drag show?

First day on the new job! I had been stressing about what to wear. I wanted something professional, but not too formal… and I also wanted something that wouldn’t make me too hot. It is the dead of summer, after all. I settled on this beautiful dress, WHICH HAS POCKETS! And shoutout to my first selfie at my new job.

Outfits of February 2017

I’m convinced that February is the worst month of the year.

But this February had some good parts: a wonderful Galentine’s Day celebration with friends; a perfect Valentine’s Day with my husband; a few adventures (to breweries, museums, restaurants); lots of shopping (some might argue too much…); and some unseasonably beautiful weather (thanks, climate change!).

Here’s what I wore.

Outfits of January 2017

Y’all, it’s been a month. This is me doing my best to keep living a good life despite being overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, and (quite frankly) scared at the America we’re living in right now.

But I digress.

In January, I read some books, saw some movies, shopped a lot, ate some delicious food, celebrated some friends at a baby shower, got back into cooking. I also set up a place to take better outfit photos. However, I haven’t used it yet because it’s in my sunroom and it’s cold in there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This month, I also got into (and quickly became addicted to) LulaRoe. Like I needed another reason to spend money. But check out my first pair of leggings at the end of this post!

Here’s what I wore this month.

Outfits of December

Sadly, I didn’t take many outfit photos throughout December. After a rough few weeks at work, I wasn’t up to dressing very cute and opted instead for dressing simply. In the new year, hopefully that changes! Here are a few things I did wear.

What I wore while in New York City…

img_4582

This has quickly become one of my staple outfits. It’s simple but cute and very easy to wear.

While in New York, my grandma, husband, and cousin had a traditional tourist day, spending time in Times Square, stopping by the Disney and Hershey stores, and visiting Rockefeller Center to see the tree.

I also wore my Forever 21 red wrap dress to meet up with my bestie, Steph, but I forgot to snap a photo. 😦 Here we are being adorable with Santa, though.

Outfits of November

November was a trying month. It started with the election of Donald Trump, which I am still stunned by, and it ended with some messy, difficult work stuff that really impacted my morale.

But there were some bright spots: a friend who made me a gift to cheer me up; a fun Thanksgiving featuring Cards Against Humanity; the return of “Gilmore Girls”; good friends and coworkers and family; a perfect dog and husband; an invitation back to my alma mater to speak to a class about journalism; the Christmas season.

Here’s what I wore (clearly jeans + boots were my thang).

Outfits of July 2016

July has been a busy month so far. My husband and I have been keeping busy each weekend with things to do. We’re actively trying to make the most of our time by getting out and doing more (at least when we feel like it!). We’ve recently taken a day trip to the beach; saw “Ghostbusters” (which I LOVED!); ate delicious food at the New England Food Truck Festival; spent time with my parents before they moved to California; and visited an art show.

Here are a few things I’ve worn this month. (Spoiler alert: I’ve become a walking Old Navy billboard.)

Let’s start with this nail polish. Not an outfit, technically, but I did wear it.

IMG_0895How amazing is this nail polish?! It’s Rose Gold Holographic Nail Polish from I Love Nail Polish (ILNP).

july-1

I wore this to my parents’ going away party as they prepared to move across the country to California. (They’re currently about halfway there!)

My little brother, my dad, my mom, and me. <3

Outfit details

  • Dress: Old Navy
  • Cardigan: Old Navy
  • Shoes: Payless

And, I wore this to go get much-needed and much-deserved drinks with friend from work. On a Monday.
